Alter Ego, Skin & Bones and Cossette Communications met up on a frozen beach in Tiny Township, Ontario, for 2 days in February.12 of our Summer Olympic athletes braved the Canadian winter for this massive, outdoor shoot.

We instantly knew this was going to be amazing. Actual athletes, in the cold, on ice. Wolves, reindeer - two locations and freezing conditions.

Mark Zibert's vision was clear. Make it real, keep it simple. Nothing superfluous, nothing cliche. The visual effects had to be seamless and invisible. On set reference photos and HDRI's were captured so that we could accurately match lighting, environment and lensing.

Our task was simple, support the story.

Saints editor Mark Paiva tackled the project head on crafting an edit that was instantly adored by all. Sitting with Alter Ego Colourist Wade Odlum the team developed a look that set the ground work for the final images using our Linear EXR workflow to keep the final grade on all WIP screenings. Vfx included adding icebergs, set extension/matte paintings, trainer, rig and tack removal on animals, compositing Jenn Abel into the iceberg diving scenes and cg snow particles. We could grade, change edits and comp and carry grade data across applications thanks to the baselight nuke plugin.

After working so closely with the agency creatives, director, editor and the Alter Ego VFX and colour team Kirejew said “the workflow we established on this project made the process easier, the final product that much better and the clients extremely happy. It’s what we aspire to on all projects"
